I don’t find photos quite so flat as you do, Frauke. When I look at an image of a place or a person, the smell memories (be they singular or a cocktail) come flooding back….
Well that’s wonderful. For me, yes, if I’ve been to the place or met the person I could conceive the smell because I’ve had the experience, but if it’s an old picture of places I haven’t been or people I don’t know (ie. my Oma’s parents) then the image is flat to me. I appreciate you sharing your experience. Thank you.
