Hi Frauka! I was out visiting my son, he lives in the mountains on Eastern Slope of the Sierras. I learned from him that the bark of two native pines have wonderful aromas: Ponderosa bark smells of vanilla, Jeffrey Pine smells of butterscotch. Its uncanny!

I would love to smell that one day! Will make a note. The book "Thirteen Ways To Smell A Tree", which I reference, has a chapter devoted to Ponderosa Pine. The author states "All around, the flaky amber bark of ponderosa trees seeps its vanilla and butter confection into the hot summer air." Thanks for sharing!
